How to choose an SEO company in Chester (and the questions that catch the cowboys)

By Webso Digital7 min read
A business meeting around a laptop, two people reviewing a website and its search performance together

Short version: judge an SEO company on evidence, not promises. Ask to see real Search Console screenshots for a business like yours, ask exactly what they will change on your site in the first month, and ask who does the work. If the answers are vague, or they guarantee you the top of Google, keep your money. Nobody can promise rankings, because Google decides them, and the firms that promise hardest tend to do the least.

We say this as an agency in the area that sells SEO, so read it with that in mind. But we've also inherited enough half-wrecked websites from Chester and Wrexham businesses to know what bad SEO looks like from the inside: thin pages nobody asked for, links from directories nobody visits, and a monthly PDF that says a lot while reporting nothing. This is the checklist we'd hand a friend before they signed anything, with anyone, including us.

Why Chester is its own game

Most Chester businesses don't need to rank across Britain. They need to be found by people in CH postcodes and the surrounding towns, which is a different job. Local rankings lean on things national campaigns barely touch: your Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, consistent name and address details across the web, and pages that actually read like they know the area. An agency that talks only about keywords and never mentions your map listing is missing where most local enquiries come from.

The questions that catch the cowboys

You don't need to understand SEO to buy it well. You just need to watch how they handle these:

  • Show me before-and-after Search Console data for a client like me. Not a ranking screenshot, the real graph. Anyone good has several and will be glad you asked.
  • What exactly will you change in month one? A proper answer names pages and specific fixes. A worrying answer is mostly about reports, audits and monitoring.
  • Who writes the content, and will I see it before it goes live? If content is written offshore by someone who has never spoken to you, it will read that way.
  • Do I own everything if we part ways? The site, the content, the Google accounts. The honest answer is yes, in writing.
  • Why is there a 12-month contract? Fair answer: there isn't, you can leave monthly. SEO takes months to work, but a long lock-in mostly protects the agency, not you.

Red flags that end the meeting

Guaranteed first place on Google. A secret method they can't explain. Hundreds of directory submissions. A price so low it couldn't cover one person's honest afternoon each month. And the classic: they can't name a single local business they've done it for. Any one of these on its own is enough, because each one tells you how the rest of the relationship will go.

What honest monthly SEO actually looks like

The unglamorous truth is that good local SEO is a known set of jobs done properly and reported plainly. Early months lean technical: fixing what stops Google crawling and trusting the site, sorting titles and structure, getting the Google Business Profile complete and active. Then it shifts to content that answers what your customers genuinely search, a steady flow of real reviews, and consistent listings. Movement on competitive terms usually shows in three to six months, and an honest agency says that on day one.

The best predictor of how an agency will treat your rankings is how straight they are with you before any money moves.

Does it have to be a Chester agency?

Honestly, no. Good SEO can be done from anywhere, and a strong agency in Leeds beats a weak one on your doorstep. What nearby does buy you is accountability and local knowledge: someone who can meet you, photograph the premises, and knows that Chester work spills into Deeside, Flintshire and Wrexham. We're 25 minutes up the road in Wrexham, which is exactly why we work this patch and not Cornwall.

If you're weighing this up for your own business, our SEO in Chester and SEO in Wrexham pages explain how we approach the area, and the SEO service page covers what the monthly work includes. Or skip the reading and ask us the questions above. We enjoy answering them, which is rather the point of this article.
